In case you’re wondering, I’m still alive. Mommy-hood has been challenging but also so rewarding. The most difficult part is trying to figure out how to balance my life with Caya and my life as my own person. I still don’t have it figured out yet. I almost always feel like: next week, I’m going to start blogging regularly again! But then, something changes and my time is just sucked away again.
I decided that even though I may not have time to write and test recipes every time, you’d still appreciate some photos. I still want to share what I’ve been doing. So here’s mostly just photos of a Red Velvet birthday cake I made for my good friend, Jacquie. Happy Birthday!

Wonderful photos! I would love to know what the beautiful red center is made of…? Gorgeous cake!!
Sarah – To level each layer of the cake we shave off a thin piece using a serrated knife. This results in delicious “extras”. To create the red center on top, we put a circle mold (or large cookie cutter) and filled it with a 1/4″ of crumbled up cake shavings (do this by hand). Then press down a bit to set it into the frosting.
If you’d like to make this cake, we had posted the recipe in the past.
I love triple layer cakes. And, yes, it’s so hard to balance. I didn’t post for weeks because of this. Nice to see you.
Angela, all the moms totally understand. =) It makes me feel a bit better. Thanks!
Wow–so beautiful! What a unique idea.
