As a brand new mama of 12 days, please excuse if this is incoherent…

During the last few weeks of pregnancy, I started creating a list of all the things I wanted to eat as soon as Caya was born. There’s a lot of my favorite foods in the “Do-Not-Eat” for pregnant mamas list so it’s been a bit of a struggle for the last 9 months. Just a few hours after Caya was born and I had just picked through the disappointing tray of hospital food, Lon’s mom arrived with the best thing ever: a bagel with cream cheese and lox. This New Yorker staple had been on my mind the whole time and I devoured it before any pictures could be taken. I haven’t had enough though and begged Lon to make his incredible homemade lox soon. I need to make up for lost time!

My mom has been staying with us and has become executive chef here at FoodMayhem kitchens. It’s like having a live-in private chef which is awesome. I’ve put in requests for Sea Cucumber with Shrimp Roe Sauce and some Tilefish. Meanwhile, she’s already knocked two more off my wish-list: a medium-rare burger and runny egg yolks.

Oh, how I missed the juicy pink centers that I was denied for so long. We used grass-fed ground beef from Spring Lake Farm which Lon found “milky” and I just ate too fast to even think about it. This morning, my mom prepare two 6 minute eggs for me. That’s another one, I’m just not going to be able to get enough of. Throw a runny egg on anything and I’ll probably like it more.

I’m not sure how long it will take before we can go out for dinner again, but the first dinner out is going to have to be a meal at Sushi Yasuda! The second one will likely be at Taste Good Malaysian so I can have a very shrimp-heavy meal. I want the Hokkien Udang Mee and lots of stuff with Belachan. There’s also all that shrimp at dim sum that I’ve had to limit so a no-holds-bar kind of eating is in order. I’m also dreaming about when the weather warms up…when Lon and I can take a stroll with Caya and have lunch outside starring a giant raw platter with plenty of clams and oysters on the half shell.

I’ve been patiently waiting for a glass of Gewurztraminer and a freshly brewed cup of coffee but I’m still too nervous to have either since I’m breastfeeding. Some say it’s ok if you have it more than an hour before feeding, but some believe the alcohol and caffeine still makes it’s way into the milk. I’ve never been a heavy drinker, though I miss the occasional glass, but I really miss that refillable cup of coffee during Sunday brunch. It’s not the same when you can only have one cup. Along with that, I’m also missing all the espresso based desserts I love, especially affogato and tiramisu.

My plan is to start some light cooking again after the 2 week mark and a great way to initiate is to incorporate the blue cheeses, soft cheeses, and cured meats I’ve missed so so much. A quick salad of pear or apple, some toasted pecans, and English Blackstick Blue Cheese will probably be my first, followed by something with goat cheese and roasted beets, another pairing I’ve missed so much! I can’t wait to spread some fresh ricotta on some crusty bread too. Cured meats is another love that we enjoy with almost no time spent. Just buy and put on a plate: prosciutto, serrano, speck, mortadella…

If you think of any more foods I might have missed, feel free to suggest. While I’m not getting much sleep, I do plan on being well fed!
