I’ve been eager to tell you for weeks… I’m pregnant!
Maybe you’ve already noticed the decline in posts and I’m sorry. This morning sickness thing has been killing me–it’s wrongly named because mine lasts all day long. Feeling ill has made it impossible to cook or even think about food. Everything tastes funny and even though I’m always hungry, I never want to eat anything, except fruit. Fruit seems to be the only thing I am consistently happy to eat right now. I’ve also been chugging cartons of orange juice.
As a life-time food lover, I don’t feel like myself, I can’t even open my fridge. I don’t want to think about my next meal. It’s all torture. My favorite foods terrify me at the moment (and the smell of hubby, Lon). I was mortified when I wanted Chef Boyardee ravioli today. Not only would I not eat that prior to pregnancy, I enjoyed eating it today. I even ate it while thinking:
“The pasta is mushy and over-cooked. The meat does not taste like meat. The tomato sauce is ketchup with bits of meat in it.”
Still, I was happy eating it. What is this world coming to?
When I do want to eat something, I only seem to want it once, except fruit. I don’t even want chocolate cake, cookies ‘n cream ice cream, or a perfect pastry. Still, I managed to put on 6lbs already and pop a little belly. The problem is self-re-enforcing in that nausea is partly from hunger, so despite not wanting to eat, I have to, to keep down the nausea. It’s really an insane cycle.
Thank goodness for my mother, who is not only doing tons of cooking for me so I can eat (force myself to eat), she’s providing me with her recipes to post. I have been promised that the nausea will end by 12 weeks, like a flip of the switch, and then I will be ravenous, so with days left of my first trimester, I’ve got my fingers crossed. Until then, you’ll be seeing more of my mom’s Chinese recipes and I’ll update you with any progress I make.

Congratulations, Jessica! 🙂
Oh my goodness, this is fantastic news!! Congratulations, and for what it’s worth, I’m sure the blogosphere understands how rough pregnancy can be on your appetite. Mazel tov!!!
Congratulations! And thank goodness for moms, right? It is great she’s there to help.
Congratulations! That’s so exciting & is wonderful news! Hope the nausea passes quickly and you’ll be able to enjoy food again soon! All my best,
Eat It
CONGRATS!!! LOL, re Chef Boyardee ravioli. Hang in there! =D
Congratulations, Jessica and Lon!
Wow, I guess pregnancy is a great equalizer: I still can’t stand Chef Boyardee ravioli because long, long, long time, I had the stuff everyday for who knows how long. I still can’t stand the smell! But, hey, the world goes round and round and round. . .
Congratulations again on your wonderful news!
Jess,
Congrats to you Lon! Hope the nausea passes soon. On behalf of your readership I say we await your full return to blogging. (they voted me spokesperson)
Congrats Jessica and you will love to eat again! Remember to get a pic of the can/jar of the Chinese pickled cucumbers (jang gua) for me when you see your Mom next time. Thank You.
That’s wonderful news! Yes. The pregnant mother’s strange cravings. At least it’s not for Belgian chocolate (actually from Belgium)or durian. 😛 Congratulations to you and Lon! Will you find out the gender of your new bundle of joy? 🙂
congratulations!! how awesome! (i’m a regular – quiet – reader for quite some time now. i did write to you once, though, about that korean bbq place, san & deul! 🙂 )
your 1st trimester cravings are a lot like mine were. i remember packing food to bring to work…2 oranges, a grapefruit, lemons to squeeze for lemonade or to add to tea. and everyone’s comments…”oh my gosh, another grapefruit today?!”
2nd & 3rd trimester my regular taste for spicy, good food returned. hang in there, i’m quite sure your normal appetite is right around the corner! 🙂
congatulations!!!
Congratulations!! I’ve heard after the first trimester it gets easier.
Congratulations, Jessica! Hope your appetite gets back soon!
As I was reading this post I thought “that’s EXACTLY how I’m feeling now!”, nothing but fruits looks appetizing to me, not even ice cream. It’s been going on for weeks, but certainly I’m not pregnant (I’m not married), so I don’t know what’s wrong.
So at least it’s good that you know the reason for your lack of appetite! 🙂 And it’s a great reason too! 🙂
Congrats Jessica! I highly recommend acupuncture for the nausea, it works 99% of the time whenever i have a hangover.. I got the idea from my acupuncturist who said alot of ppl come here for pregnancy nausea symptoms, and it works all the time!
I am so happy for you both! Chef B. Is one of those things- about once a year the dusty can in my office kitchen calls to me. Hopefully the morning sickness won’t last too long 🙂
oh happy day! thanks for sharing your excellent news. 🙂
OMG, thanks so much for all the support! You guys make me feel so much better already. I’ve been feeling so down about not being able to work on food.
Connie, I’m such a dope. I took a picture of the pickled cucumbers but forgot to post it. I haven’t been able to keep up with the most normal of things.
Kim, we will find out at 20 weeks. We’ll be sure to post it!
Janene, I remember when you e-mailed. Thanks for the re-assurance. I need to know that this will pass!
Mai, sorry to hear! I hope you figure it out in time to enjoy some summer ice cream. I know I miss it!
Le, I thought about that but I don’t have a good acupuncturist at the moment. My dad uses one that always has a 2 hr wait, even with appt, and I can’t deal with that. Do you have a rec?
Kristine, it’s so funny. I think I only ate Chef B once or twice 20 years or so ago. I couldn’t even image how I thought of it.
Thanks again everyone. I’m so happy to share with you!
Congratulations to you and to Lon. Take heart in the knowledge that the cravings will pass. I once sent my poor husband out into a snowstorm to get jello, and I didn’t even like jello when I was a kid. It was after midnight and the stores were all closed so we couldn’t buy the mixes. He had to go to three diners to get the jello because I only wanted lime jello. Actually thought he was going to kill me because when he got back I took two bites, got nauseous and couldn’t eat the rest. BTW, still can’t stand jello.
Hi Jess (and Lon, although we haven’t met!) Felicitations! Just wait until you get to the food everywhere but in their tummy part of parenthood . . .Good thing they’re soooo cute 😉 so all this is worth it, even the random searches for LIME???? Jello . . .I convinced a waiter that I was craving CANNELLONI once in 1997 in Boston. It wasn’t on the menu, but they made it for pregnant moi. Honey, milk it, so to speak, now . . .And good thing you’ve got mom’s wonderful (I’m sure) recipes to fill in . . . as a mom-to-be you will have enough guilt to deal with without worrying too much about FOOD MAYHEM!
Congratulations!
While I do not comment often, I keep reading your blog. This deserved a comment 🙂
Congratulations! Such exciting news!
Perhaps you can find new fruits to try during this time? Maybe it will make it a little more interesting in the interim.
I hope the nausea ends, and you get your full appetite back soon. hang in there, it gets better 🙂
Ahhhhhhh! This is SO exciting. Congratulations!!! 🙂
Oh wow – congratulations!!!
Oh wow. Huge news. Congrats, Jessica!!!
Congratulations to you both! Wonderful news!
Carmen
From the old guy and gal who managed to survive having 7 kids! CONGRATS!!!!! Marie was not really afflicted with that problem with any but one! Now we have a bunch of grand kids and great grandkids. You will survive morning sickness, and don’t beat up on Lon…it is only half his fault:-))!
And some of our grandchildren are absolutely wonderful! One of our kids this past year won a full 4 year University Scholarship and then won two more to augment the big one! She is really excited, has been accepted to a premed course, and her three room mates are really varied.
One girl from Norway, one from Australia and the last one another B.C. gal!
See what you have to look forward to? LONG way in the future!
Congrats Jessica and Lon! Can’t wait to read about your new adventures with both little ones! (your newborn and 4-legged child!) 🙂
Congrats!!! What exciting news, I hope your Chef Boyardee cravings change into more foodie ones, haha 🙂
Thanks for all the congratulations!
Barbara, good to know that you still don’t like jello. I would feel very strange about liking Chef Boyardee permanently.
Dolce, I still think of you when there’s a lot of chocolate around.
Cheryl, great idea. I’m assigning hubby to go in search for me.
Old Doug, with 7 kids, I could have guessed that Marie didn’t have much morning sickness. It is one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. I have to laugh about “some of our grandchildren are absolutely wonderful” LOL
Jessica,
I have been basking in the joy of your news ever since last week. I am so happy for you. So so happy for you.
And don’t worry – the nausea will pass, your taste buds will return, and you soon will have a little foodie to share it all with. My favorite part of parenthood has been sharing the kitchen with my kids.
So great to see you last week. I’m back the weekend of 9/11. Let’s get together again. Maybe I can bring the kids by so you can experience the joys you have to look forward to. Ha!
Vanessa
Congrats, Jessica and Lon! I’m sure the real Chef Boyardi is very happy and pleased if he could hear your comment.
Congrats!!! How far along are you? Im about 10 weeks and I dont want anything but sweets. Everything smells bad to me unless its something sweet. I’ve actually lost a few pounds…
Good luck! Hope you can eat regular foods soon!
Congrats Jess & Lon!
Congratulations, Jessica! That’s wonderful, wonderful news. I hope the morning sickness passes very soon for you.
Vanessa, I would love to meet the kids! We should get together with all the kids. I’ve only met Carol’s and they’re great!
Wonders, OMG! Congratulations to you too!! I’m just about 12 weeks so I’m starting to feel better but not 100% yet. Can’t believe we’re just 2 weeks apart!
Thanks JP and Sarah!
CONGRATS!!WHEEEEEEEE definitely saw it coming with the “a surprise” thing haha… but I asked Justin but he claimed he didn’t know 🙂 Well I guess it’s weird to read this on your Blog rather then someone actually in the family telling me… oh well. Coming back to the US soon!
That’s great news! CONGRATS!
Jeff, when you asked Justin, he might not have known. It wasn’t a secret in the family, we just only told people as we saw them, and since you’re not here…you should blame Aunt Sherry for not telling you. JK
Thanks pigpigscorner!
Ooh, just saw this post! Congrats!!
Congrats! When I saw your Aug 1 post (Lion’s Head Casserole) about wanting your mommy’s food (and not feeling well) – that should have been a sign to watch out for 🙂 Good luck to you!
Congratulations! What wonderful news. If you need help deciding on a stroller or a car seat or anything baby-related, check out Baby Bargains–loved that book when I was expecting.
Thanks Talida, Dan, and Asianmommy!! My sister-in-law bought us the latest edition of Baby Bargains.
Congratulations! My daughter is also pregnant…she is due May 7, 2011..what is your due date? Have the “countdown to my birth” flip calendar? Wealth of info!!!
I’m happy for you! Been checking your blog for quite some time now but it’s my first time to comment co’z I just want to congratulate you 🙂
Hey Jessica and Lon! Congratulations! I’m thrilled to hear the incredibly happy news! I’m totally intrigued with your craving for Chef Boyardee – it’s making me think that this stuff is better for us than we think. Perhaps wishful thinking, but I’m still totally fascinated. I’m looking forward to following this amazing experience via your blog. Best wishes, Christine 🙂
Donna, mine is Feb 26th. Are you sure it’s a May 7th due date? That would mean she conceived within the last week…
Thanks for commenting Bel!
Thanks Christine! I hope I’ll be back out at some blogger meet-ups soon so you can see it first-hand too.
Just found you though a friend, and want to try the vegetarian dishes.
Conga rats, Jessica. I had that “morning sickness” thing too when I was reproducing–the good news is that the pregnancies with it are usually reasonably uneventful as far as bad news goes. Cravings–brings back memories. I craved canned iced tea, new at the time, and one doctor who was a good friend told me what I likely needed was electrolytes–fed me some gatoraid which I normally thought tasted like old sweat socks, was delicious–that is always a sure sign of me being dehydrated, when that stuff tastes good.
Sorry about your Chef Boyardee craving. Likely it’s because it’s so bland–the body’s way of protecting against herbs and spices which it thinks might damage the baby.
Do your breathing exercises, and beware of after-pregnancy dieting. Exercise is the key, I’m convinced, not dieting. May your deliveries be as easy as mine were. I look forward to seeing your posting about it all…I want so to try those yummy looking sparrow nests. Praise goddess Seattle area has tons of Asian markets. I have to look for the lilies and the soy sheets…rest is easy-peasy.
Starshadow, thanks for some reassurance. I’ve never been able to “diet” and I’ve always been active (until morning sickness hit) so I’m not really worried about that part. I feel better day by day but still having a hard time eating which just stinks!
Whoo hoo!! Congratulations, Jessica. Such great news and this is one lucky kid coming into the world, who’ll never want for a good meal. Hope you feel better real soon. Luckily, your fruit cravings are in the middle of summer, when there’s a lot of yummy fruit. My friend who’s due next month, had the same fruit cravings in her first trimester. It’ll get easier. When your cravings for pastries come back, let me know and I’ll bring some by. 🙂
YAYAYAYAYAYAY!!! Congratulations!!! I am so excited for you!
