We got a 3 pound pack of Nantucket Supreme Bay Scallops (individually quick frozen) a while back at either Costco or BJ’s. It’s terrible! If you see it, do not buy it! I followed the directions on the bag for thawing and tried other methods. I’ve tried cooking it in different ways, but we both just hate it. The texture is fine but it tastes pretty fishy and it lets out so much water.
Warning: Do Not Buy Nantucket Supreme Bay Scallops!

It’s possible Costco or BJs or the shipping company just handled the transport poorly and thawed the product more than it should have. That would help explain the fishy taste
Thanks for the warning!
anonymous, you’re absolutely right and that possibility scares me even more.
Ugh! I don’t know what it is with the price clubs, but I’ve had the same experience with seafood at Sam’s. I never bother with it anymore, which is sad because the prices are good – but safety’s better!
I’ve occasionaly had problems with frozen food from Costco, where the contents were very obviously thawed and then refrozen. I’ve seen idiot customers changing their minds about frozen food purchases: too lazy and inconsiderate to go back to the freezer, they just dump it anywhere in the store. If an employee returns it to the freezer, someone else gets stuck with it. Costco is good about refunds, and this particular problem is not news to them, so you can get a do-over on your next visit. You can avoid the problem by selecting packages from the middle of the freezer — never take what’s up front. I have had no problems at all since I learned this little trick.
Jim, some great advice, thanks. Unfortunately, we’re pretty far from the nearest BJ’s/Costco so I can’t go back in time to exchange or refund. We only go every 3 weeks or so.
I bought a bag of these “Nantucket” Bay Scallops from BJs recently and was going to return them when I noticed they are a “farm raised” and “a product of China!!.” Yuk! However, we don’t have anything to eat for dinner tonight so we are going to try them and I will let you know if I am still alive to tell the story…
I,too, bought these scallops because of the colorful packaging, the price and the words “Nantucket” and “natural” on the bag. Cooked them up and disliked the taste enough that I will not buy them again. I know my seafood and scallops. I hate that metallic afterbite- so un-natural! Only today did I notice the sticker that says “farm raised in China.” That explains it, for sure. I have a Chinese, adopted, daughter, so it isn’t prejudice! I never intentionally buy anything farm-raised. Sorry I didn’t see the label, down on the lower back of the product.
I had the opposite experience. I bought mine at Cosco, served them at a party and got such GREAT applause that I bought more. The second time, I let some of them thaw before cooking, and they were tasteless. However, the ones I cooked from the frozen state were delicious! Bought another package, and they were so good I am trying to find them again. My Costco didn’t have them the last two times I went in. I’m still looking for them.
We agree with Jimmie Harvey. We bought our 3# bag at BJ’s. I’m not a scallop lover, but my husband is. He uses them mostly to make scallop chowder. Actually, that’s how I ended up on this website… he just used the end of the bag and we couldn’t remember where we had bought them from. No Costco around here, and we belong to BJ’s, not Sam’s, so we’re making that assumption. No problems… he says they taste fine. I think they smell fishy, but like I said..I don’t eat them.
I used to live on Nantucket, and when I spotted Costco’s Nantucket scallops, I bought package. They were delicious. The trick is letting them thaw in a plastic bag in cold water for about a half hour. The cooking should be sauteing, in real butter, just as they’re cooked on Nantucket. Pity is, Costco is no longer carrying the product.
I am a Nantucket native.. I am very proud of Nantucket and It’s good name.. I am also a former Nantucket bay scalloper as was my father before me.. Nantucket is the last sustainable fishing ground for these cold water bay scallops. “Nantucket supreme bay scallops” sold at Cosco, have absolutely nothing to do with Nantucket.. They are a warm water Calico type scallop from China and are not even in the class of Nantucket bay scallops.. So if you ever get a chance to try true Nantucket Bay Scallops, you will taste the difference..
