My friend Angie gave me a bottle of Ume Plum vinegar, asking me to figure out what to do with it. I’ve let this assignment sit on the back burner for a while, not really on purpose, but maybe there was some subconscious procrastination. I tasted the vinegar alone and it’s very salty compared to […]

Casillero del Diablo
Monday, May 25, 2009
We drank a 2007 Chilean Carmenere from Concha y Toro vineyard’s Casillero del Diablo wines.
This is a good beginner red: light, a bit sweet, and very fruity, and inexpensive (we paid $9.99). It smells wonderfully fruity as well. We both found it a little bitter on the finish though.
Chili Mango Sauce
Monday, May 25, 2009
Shopping in Flushing last week I saw two ingredients that inspired me. The first was lemongrass, I picked up a few spears; the second was fresh cayenne pepper, I bought a few beautiful chilies.
For some reason, I had it in my head that these had to be combined with mango, so Jessica picked up a […]
Sushi Yasuda #30
Sunday, May 24, 2009
There was no Sushi Yasuda #29 (see #28) because it was actually the first time we didn’t try anything new. Crazy right? But this time, Lon immediately noticed blowfish on the appetizer menu as soon as he sat down. The domestic Blowfish (Fugu), that they are serving right now, is bred poison-free. It’s flash-fried perfectly […]
Asian-Style Pork Barbecue and Hot Slaw Sandwich
Saturday, May 23, 2009
We had pork left over in our fridge. When I looked at it, I kept envisioning some type of Asian-inspire barbecue sandwich. We had some Coke left over from a recent party and I thought about how some Korean mamas marinate beef in the sugary soda. I wanted the crisp caramelization found in Korean barbecue, […]
Cupcake Stop
Saturday, May 23, 2009
We went out for an evening walk with Ice (our Jack Russell) and when we got back, there was a cupcake truck parked in front of our building. We took that as a sign that we should have some.
Cupcake Stop has got the marketing concept down. It’s a cute truck. They have cupcakes for $2 […]
Pickles, Olives Etc.
Friday, May 22, 2009
We spotted this Pickles, Olives Etc. stand in a street fair and I was very skeptical. Street fairs are so full of over-priced complete junk these days. Luckily, we did give it a try: some Kosher dills, some half sours, and some spicy pickles. To my complete shock. They were all really good. I’m not […]
Pattycakes
Friday, May 22, 2009
Over a year ago, I wrote a post about how bad the service is at NY Cake Supplies. Despite that and high prices, I’ve still been shopping there. (By the way, never buy anything perishable there because they don’t care about selling expired product. Only buy supplies!) I don’t really have another choice.
One night, I […]
White Chocolate, Banana, Cherry Bread
Thursday, May 21, 2009
Staring at my pile of over-ripe bananas, some sort of banana bread/banana muffin idea was tumbling about in my head. I spotted an interesting combination of flavors in Nigella’s book, How to Be a Domestic Goddess. It was cupcakes made with banana, dried cherries, and white chocolate. Not wanting cupcakes at the moment, I married […]
Shredded Pork & Burdock Root
Thursday, May 21, 2009
A while back I wasn’t feeling great and so I was seeing an acupuncturist. She told me about consuming burdock root as it has strong medicinal benefits. Wikipedia agrees, and no one denies Wikipedia! So Jessica’s mom made me a delicious dish of Shredded Pork with Burdock Root. Recently, I’ve been having a hankering for […]
