Perfect Biscuits

Saturday, February 13, 2010

I have played around with this biscuit recipe many times now, which started out as the Cheddar and Chive Biscuit recipe from BLT Fish. I have suspicions that it’s not the same recipe they use in the restaurant, but that’s a different story. I started with the recipe they shared, made it, liked it, then decided to play with it at times when I didn’t have the exact ingredients. Over the year since I tried the recipe, different cheeses have replaced the cheddar, and different herbs have replaced the chives. Almost every way is good.

Caramel Macchiato Cupcakes

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

It was time to make something special for Winnie’s birthday. Besides that, I kind of owe her. She was one of my first friends in college, possibly the second person I met. We were sitting next to each other in an economics class (theater style seating) when I just fell asleep on her. I had yet to speak to her but I already drooled a bit. Anyone who will then foster a friendship with the weird girl that just fell asleep on them is surely the sweetest and most forgiving person ever. We’ve been friends for 12 years now.

Blueberry Topped Fiori di Sicilia Cake

Sunday, February 7, 2010

It was time to make a birthday cake for my little brother, Justin, 6 foot 1 inch tall and about twice my weight, but still my little brother. He doesn’t really get excited about cake so I struggled a little over this one. Lon reminded me that Justin isn’t into frosting. It seems he often wipes some off. Janny reminded me that Justin likes blueberries. So, despite using blueberries on a cake just recently, I was going to do it again, but in a birthday cake with no frosting. I know some would not call it a birthday cake if it does not don the billowy puffs and swirls of sugar, so if that’s you, just call this a perfect tea time cake.

Fortune Cookies with Love

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

We’re on a tight schedule of recipe themes here, moving right on from Superbowl, to Valentine’s Day, and don’t forget Chinese New Year (or Lunar New Year) is the same days as V-day this year. I knew as soon as I took my last bite of Un-fried Buffalo Wing, I’d start thinking about hearts and good fortune. Can I combine the two into a loving Fortune Cookie?

Un-fried Buffalo Wings

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Most people are amazed to find out that Buffalo Wings are flavored with just butter and hot sauce. Yup, that’s it: simple and delicious. It’s tangy and spicy, over a base of fatty chicken-y goodness. Plus, who doesn’t love anything fried.

Alton Brown’s recipe adds a little garlic, but he stretches further by making his without frying them. This caught me eye right away because Lon and I could really use the calorie savings (apparently the holidays never ended for us) and because frying is just sort of a pain for people at home. It makes a mess, the kitchen will smell for days, and it’s hard to fry a large quantity for your Superbowl party.

Blueberry Coconut Cream Cake

Sunday, January 17, 2010

It was Angie’s birthday and Angie is a Taste Bud, a term I’ve given to friends who share my love of food and have impeccable taste. I get restaurant recommendations from her all the time. You can thank her for introducing us to Degustation, Eletarria (closed now), The Red Head, and many more. She’s no stranger to the bakery scene either, so my brain was cranking. What would it take to impress her?

Chocolate Peanut Butter Footballs

Thursday, January 14, 2010

I’m gearing up for Superbowl, and in my world, that has nothing to do with the sport, the teams, or wherever it’s located. Where is the Superbowl? For me, it’s just another excuse to eat, cook, and be merry. Yup, I’ll be throwing you a couple of ideas for your party and I think a football shaped treat is just the way to start us off on the right foot.

My Black & White Cookies

Thursday, January 7, 2010

You may be thinking that this does not look exactly like the Black & White Cookie you just bought at the deli/bakery/bagel shop. You are right. I’ve changed this long time classic.

You see, I made classic Black & White Cookies from Carole Walter’s Great Cookies book. These big waist busting beauties were very good. I love the lemon oil that brightens and lightens the simplicity of vanilla and chocolate. But, the best part is the middle. I tend to like the thicker parts and not the thinner edges. I like that these are cakey cookies.

ABC Scrambled Eggs

Sunday, January 3, 2010

When I was in Taiwan (a long long time ago), I’d start speaking to a vendor, and they’d immediately say, “ABC”, nod, and go on with their answer to whatever my question was. It was a little odd that everyone wanted to clearly acknowledge and label me as an American Born Chinese. It was obvious from my accent, or long hair (school girls are not allowed to have hair past shoulder length), or being XXL by their standards (which is a size 2 in the US).

Pancake Inspired Cupcakes: Banana Nut

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

One of my favorite childhood memories was going to IHOP (International House of Pancakes) with my family. My mom and I both loved Banana Nut Pancakes (which I don’t see on their menu anymore these days but you can ask for it). For some reason, as a 6 year-old, I thought I was cooler than my brother, just for the sheer reason that I had the same favorite pancakes as my mom. I would share a giant stack with my mom, smiling all the way through the meal, because I just knew my mom liked me more. Yup, purely because my brother would order something else.
