Pittsburgh, here we come! We’re going for a wedding (Yay Vinnie and Kristine) this weekend, but you know we make every trip into an eating trip. I plan to come back fat and happy so I need some delicious, mouth-watering, drool inspiring recommendations, and fast. Pretty please!

Have a great time! I’ll be in the same state this weekend; I have a conference in Philadelphia. I’ve been scouring the web for ideas.
Do you mean Pittsburgh, PA? If so, it is imperative that you head down to the Strip District and wander around. There are many food shops and restaurants. A local legend is the Primanti Bros Sandwich. The original shop is located in the Strip, but there are other locations. In the same neighborhood you can find both DeLuca’s or Pamela’s P&G Diner, both known for breakfast. I used to favor DeLuca’s, but they seem to have gone down a bit the last time I was there. Wholey’s is a famous fish market in the Strip, but my mother always preferred Benkovitz’s around the corner.
Another area to explore is the South Side. It has an over abundance of bars (wouldn’t recommend unless you love to be smooshed into places with college students getting drunk), but there are places worth visiting. Nakama is supposed to have great sushi. I love the gyros at Mike and Tony’s. The Beehive is a great alternative to get coffee than Starbucks. I also used to go to the Claddagh Irish Pub down there.
If you want to venture a little farther away from downtown, Polish hill(it’s a neighborhood) is also known for their Pierogies and polish food, but I have never had them. There is also Tessaro’s in Bloomfield. I had a friend that swore by their open faced steak sandwich. It is in “Little Italy” which I think is about the same area as the polish part. They are also famous for their burgers.
Another landmark is The “O” hot dog shop in oakland. I am not sure if it is still there, though. If it is, be forewarned, it isn’t the prettiest place and I would go across the street to the law school if you have to use the bathroom. The dogs and fries are great. Get it to go and eat in nearby schenley park. Also, unless you have 5 people with you, you do not need more than a small fry. One more thing! Get the hot dogs at the hot dog counter and the fries in the fry counter in the back corner. Yes, it does make a difference!
Ok….I think I am done…..Can you guess where I am from
Have a great time!
EMC, any chance you’ll come to Pittsburg? I know it’s kinda far but if you have time….oh the eating we could do together!
Brandy, thank you for your killer response! Thank You! Thank You!
Enjoy your trip and look forward to hear about it
I wish! This is somewhat of a whirlwind trip–in for the Edgar Allan Poe conference (yes, you read that right!) and right back out two days later. One of these days I’ll be in your neck of the woods, and we’ll go up a dress size!
EMC, up a dress size? On second thought, maybe us meeting is not such a good idea. JK
Have a great time! There is a new 5-star near Pittsburg if you have a chance to visit – http://www.nemacolin.com/dining/fine-dining/lautrec
Of course I echo the recommendation to visit the Strip since I work for the community development group in the Strip, but I’m not being biased because the reason I work for the CDC in the Strip is because of the food! For fine dining visit Eleven, Lidia’s or Cioppino…each has its loyalists. My personal favorite is Eleven -I think it can hold its own among fine restaurants anywhere in the world. For breakfast try Pamela’s, DeLuca’s or JoJo’s…once again each has its fans for good reasons. My favorite is Pamela’s, but I occasionally get in a DeLuca’s or JoJo’s state of mind and nothing else will do. These places are not advertisements for healthy living, but once in a while this kind of indulgence is important for your mental health – after all, all things in moderation, even over-indulgence. As for the rest, there is really too much to even try to recommend…high on my current list (which changes monthly) is the cafe at Enrico Biscotti. Enrico’s was selected as one of the country’s top ten bakeries by the Road Food people, but less well known is that there is a tiny little cafe hidden in the back, as well as Pittsburgh’s first licensed winery (Carlos Garage Winery located in the basement of the building)…think there’s enough going on in this tiny little space? The food is spectacular, you’ll feel as if you’re in a small cafe in Europe -it’s just a one-of-a-kind experiences (lunch and breakfast only). I would highly recommend their first Friday dinner, but you’re schedule probably doesn’t allow for it. Visit http://www.neighborsinthestrip.com for more of a flavor of the Strip or check any of the following for a visual of what the Strip is all about. http://www.srirambala.com/soundslides/strip/index.html

Typo Nazi says: It’s Pittsburgh with an “h”
Apathetic Nazi says: I love the Pittsburg Steelers.
(Have fun Lon & Jess!)
Thanks Cindy! We won’t be arriving till Saturday morning and the wedding is Sat evening so mostly we will be going to some of these suggestions on Sunday and Monday (breakfast and lunch only). We’ll have to make some tough choices, but are these all places we need reservations for or walk-in?
Thanks Tim and Alex. Will edit now.
Bummer!
I put a *huge* list here with links, but it thought it was spam, and wouldn’t let me post it. So, I’ll just list the spots I mentioned:
for walking around:
-Strip on Saturday mornings!
lunch & dinner spots:
-Eleven (new American & FANTASTIC!!)
-Kaya (Carribean influenced goodness)
-Legume (local & sustainable)
-Dinette (pizza & small plates – local & sustainable)
-Bona Terra (really interesting fine dining)
-Umi (best sushi in town)
-Pusadee’s Garden (great Thai & beautiful courtyard)
-Paris 66 (new French bistro)
-Yo Rita (great foodie-style taqueria)
brunch:
-Casbah
-Point Brugge
-Coca Cafe
-Six Penn
I think you can pretty much walk in to any of these places.
I hope you enjoy your visit!
Ehrrin, thanks so much! I’m sorry you spent all that time and then got spam filtered. =( You rock!
Go to DeLucas in the strip district for breakfast!
Thanks, Jessica!
As for donuts…well, you read on my blog about the dastardly donut dude and his hateful “hippie” donuts. Otherwise, there’s a new Dunkin’ Donuts in Squirrel Hill, and some great shops out in the suburbs, but we’re behind the times with the donuts-are-the-new-cupcakes craze. But, to satisfy your sweet tooth, try Vanilla Pastry Studio in E. Liberty (next door to Paris 66 I mentioned above). Heavenly stuff. If you check it out, make sure to try some lollys along with any other treats (lemon is my favorite).
I’ve been in Pittsburgh for almost 12 years and just adore it. I always love bragging about how great it is! (in fact, i have a huge list of “pittsburgh tips”–food and other stuff i can email you if you like).
bon voyage!
Molly, sounds like Delucas is a popular one. We’ll probably be headed there Sunday morning.
Ehrrin, would love your list! E-mail me at Jessica@ my website name.
the most famous local place, other than Pamela’s (where the Obama’s visit) is Primanti Brothers (several locations – http://www.flickr.com/photos/cygnoir/327896003/
