*start rant*
There certainly needs to be a balance in the lighting if only for the fact that it would allow food photographers to *not* use their flashes.

It's already disturbing enough when you're trying to enjoy your meal when a flash goes off in a restaurant with normal lighting. Given the darker environments and your constricted pupils, it really sucks when you're left blinded while trying to eat.

Especially crummy when there's parties at dark restaurants.

*end rant*

I am usually not a fan of liver, but that chicken liver mousse is delicious. I really like the gnocchi too. Although, I think I pretty much like any dish with pears. Next time we have wine and cheese we should make a savory pear tart or something.

This is also my biggest restaurant pet peeve - the lack of light. It must've been pretty bad if your mother cannot read the menu! They should have realised this problem by now!

Kalyan, yea, it stinks.

Kim, interesting that you consume less in the dark. That seems fair since i enjoy it less, so at least I should get less fat right? Hmm, it's hard to say. At restaurants, we just take one or two of each and then dig in. We can't wait to eat and I like my food hot. At home, I may take a lot of pictures. If it's not hot food, I may prop and re-prop, change plates, try new garnishes. Sometimes it's a lot! I'm not a great photographer so I kind of just shoot a lot and hope for the best.

love your sense of humor with the black photo. :) But think of this as an opportunity to experience this new trend of eating in the dark. They say people consume less when they eat in the dark because they would concentrate on their satiety level instead.

I admire your food photography. How many takes does it take to get the perfect photo?

I face exactly the same problem Jessica. I went for a lovely dinner yesterday where we had to use the flash for photos. And went for a review the day before. Same problem.
