We were out looking at apartments again last night and by the time we were done, it was way past our normal dinner time. We were starving and a resident in the building recommended a place about a block away, so we scurried over to V & T Pizzeria and Restaurant. It’s an old school Italian place that looks like it’s been around for a while. The supermarket quality bread and toppings on the table let you know not to expect too much.
One of the entrees came with a choice of salad, pasta, or fries. We chose salad and it came first, swimming in oil and vinegar. It was just Iceberg so I wouldn’t have liked it anyway.
We got a small pizza (6 slices), half plain, half sausage, which was pretty regular. The sauce and cheese tasted just like a standard NYC slice but the crust was thinner. The sausage was also pretty regular, strong in fennel, but otherwise just like anything you could buy in a supermarket.
The Chicken Alla Mario is topped with prosciutto, spinach, cheese, and pink sauce. The flavor was pretty nice, especially the pink sauce. How bad can anything with salty pork and cheese be? Alas, the chicken was quite dry and reaffirms my feelings against white meat chicken. We thought it was odd that they managed to make the spinach perfectly but still over-cooked the chicken. Oh well.
V & T is not notable, but decent for the price ($41 including tax and tip). I’d stay away from chicken but I imagine they’d be an ok place to order pasta for delivery if you’re in the neighborhood. (We may be in the neighborhood soon.)

Even the ordinary still looks tasty
Mmmm tasty looking pizza. I remember you went to artichoke a few months back, how was it? My friend keeps raving about it and its tempting me to try it.
Oh about the barista pictures, it didnt come out too good cause it was dark and he was moving quite a bit lol so I dont think I’m going to post them. But if you want to check out some of the pictures I took from Hill Country yesterday, you can check out my xanga at http://www.xanga.com/chinitaa. It was a bit orangy in there..lol
V&T; is acceptable, but there are much better options. I'll post them to you privately b/c I don't want the world discovering these places!
Eatingfoodboy, this is true. A melty grilled cheese will always make my heart flutter.
Wonders, Artichoke’s Artichoke pie is unique, like artichoke dip on pizza, good but so so heavy. Their regular pizza is also good, but not mind blowing. My favorite in NYC is Numero 28
Bill G, can’t wait to try some of your favorites.
how is your house hunting going? I think the lack of quality housing and high rentals is one thing which binds NYC and Bombay. Everyone from the rest of India moves in to Bombay (including me). I guess the same holds true for NYC. All the best
Knife, everything in Manhattan is overly expensive but the market is softening a bit now that the economy here is poop.
Wow, I remember going to V & T after classes at CCNY 30 years ago. You post brings back a lot of memories. I gather standards have slipped a bit, as it was about the best pizza joint up there at the time. Their pepperoni pizza was terrific, with lots of creamy cheese. No heartburn later that night, either. At the time, it was a favorite with Columbia students, and locals.
Peter G. Wow 30 years ago? It’s impressive that it’s still there.
