About FoodMayhem

Jessica & Lon

In a chaotic world of food, FoodMayhem is bringing order.

Written from New York City (mostly), FoodMayhem.com is all about... food! We love food: talking about food, writing about food, looking at food, taking pictures of food, making a blog about food, and, of course, eating food.

Inside the Despana Basket: Olive and Artichoke Pates

Pates

We got these cool little containers of pate in our Despana Basket: Black Olive, Green Olive, and Artichoke. I broke out some bread and some cheese and called it our appetizer last night. But when we peeled back the covers, it looked so unappetizing, we hesitated before eating the brown, gelatinous goo.

olive pate

We convinced ourselves to taste it, but after a taste of each flavor, we pushed the plate aside, and it ended up in the garbage. It's rare that food gets thrown out in this apartment, but these pates were seriously gross. The artichoke pate wasn't pleasant but both olive flavors were extremely bitter and caused a gag reflex for me. I guess it must be an acquired taste... like vegemite?

I have tried in vain to develop a taste for vegemite. I imagine this is no different...
