Lon’s co-workers got us a gift certificate for Zabar’s Zabar’s, one of my favorite stores. They have an awesome cheese selection, the best smoked fish counter, and knowledgeable staff in the second floor housewares section. I miss living nearby so much!!

Last night, we went to Zabar’s like a kid at the candy store, going ga-ga over everything. We had to exercise restraint and just get a couple of things we actually needed. Ok, so we don’t actually need anymore stuff in our kitchen but let’s say, relatively needed. With Manny’s very insightful help, we left with our new kitchen toys.

Lon wanted a meat cleaver. He loves being the butcher and I gladly give up that roll. With a meat clever, you want some good weight, but don’t spend too much. This knife gets banged around and damaged easily. We got a Joyce Chen cleaver for $26.98 with a comfortable wooden handle.

It’s time for my offset serrated knife to retire. Manny is a big fan of Messermeister and lucky for us, one was on sale for $44.98. This one has a curved heel and a little shorter than the Wusthof we have, but I’m willing to give it a try.

My favorite utility pan is an ancient one my mom gave me when I first moved out of her house ten years ago. It was already old when I inherited it and by now, the handle is loose causing some mishaps. We’ve tried fixing the handle but no solution seems permanent. It was time to replace it. We gave Manny our criteria: size, not non-stick, not ultra expensive, and he came up with two, but seemed to favor the Kitchenaid 12 inch Skillet, 5 ply stainless steel clad, because of it’s sound construction and ability to distribute heat evenly. On sale for $69.98, it seemed like a steal (no pun intended) and we were sold. A beauty isn’t it; I just love shiny new pans!

Last time we ate crabs, we made a mental note to buy some shell crackers. My teeth will thank me for this purchase.
